KISS.

I remember teachers in my life using the acronym KISS—Keep It Simple, Stupid. I didn’t personally like the word stupid on the end. My mother wouldn’t let me use that word in reference to a person. There was no name calling in my house. (Probably not completely true, but that was the rule.) This probably explains why name-calling crawls under my skin, regardless of who is slinging insults at whom. But, name-calling is beside the point. This post is about keeping it simple.

The U.S. Navy began using the term in 1960, a design principle that most systems work best when kept simple, rather than made complicated. By the 1970s, KISS had become popularized.

As for me, I normally blog four to five times per month. Simple. This April, I took the challenge of 26 posts on a theme of action from A-Z. To Keep It Stupid Simple, I’m concluding here.

You could be doing anything today, but you’re with me. Thank you.

  1. Crystal,
As I got up at 5:00 am to go to the hospital for my Mom’s procedures only to get there and they refuse to let me in because it had been re-scheduled. I am back at home now and would like to call the hospital stupid. But I won’t because the health workers have been working hard during Covid. Hopefully they told me correctly about her procedure today. I am so grateful for you for all you have accomplished on this blog. Never say you cannot accomplish anything.

    1. Hi Shay, I hate that extra exasperation for you, and I hope you can nap before heading back to the hospital. Even through all of it, you took time to encourage me here. Thank you, my friend. I’m praying for you and your mother now. ❤️

  2. Another great post, Crystal. KISS is very useful advice in many situations, including in keeping people’s attention when giving a talk or writing a blog post. Love, love, love your ending; I’m still smiling from it. Brilliant! 😊

  3. You may or may not know this, but I love playing with that acronym. I’ve written about it in several posts over the years on my blog. I don’t like the “stupid” at the end either. I’d link one of those posts here, but that would be obnoxious and un-simple.

    1. 😂 Sometimes links are appropriate. For example, when bloggers have become friends, like us, Rhonda, or when bloggers have similar thoughts. Come to think of it, I remember one of your KISS posts, but I totally understand the hesitation. ❤️

  4. Pucker Up For Some Politically Correct Ways to Say Someone is Stupid?

A few clowns short of a circus.
A few fries short of a Happy Meal.
    An experiment in Artificial Stupidity.
    A few beers short of a six-pack.
Dumber than a box of hair.
A few peas short of a casserole.
Doesn’t have all his cornflakes in one box.
The wheel’s spinning, but the hamster’s dead.
One Fruit Loop shy of a full bowl.
One taco short of a combination plate.

  5. Double-Wit!

See, Crystal, name-calling doesn’t have to be mean.

I’m familiar with “KISS,” of course, and I do let it guide my writing at times. and it also brings to mind a poster one of my teachers displayed in her classroom – “Evitate Obfuscation.”

Alas, many mistake odd, multi-syllabled monstrosities for wit. Oftentimes, sadly, they don’t quite grasp the meaning of the wonders they use.

There, but for the Grace of God, go I, which is why, at three syllables, lights flash and alarms ring forth.
