‘Twas the Day Before Winter Break

‘Twas the day before winter break
And all through the school,
Students and staff awaited 
the upcoming Yule.
 
The seniors were all 
just a bit brain dead.
I gifted them some time 
to get ahead.
 
A Holiday Happening,
a lunchtime talent show.
The kids and their gifts,
My mind did blow.
 
Singers and dancers,
A drumline, too.
A public prom proposal
and subsequent “I do.”
 
A Hallmark start  
to the two-week break
feeling thankful indeed—
make no mistake. 
 
Yet at the final bell, 
I ran for my car with a shout,
"Happy Holidays to All!
Mrs. Byers is out."
So sad I missed the school orchestra concert last night, but I woke up to Dvořák, and the world seemed alright. Peace.

    I just read this in depth article on teaching on CNN. I have never been so glad I had to go on an early retirement the year before Covid. I cannot imagine how all of you guys are doing it. I hope you have a great break. Sleep, eat, pray, or do whatever you need to do in order to get yourself rested and relaxed. I miss teaching in class and would still be there if I had not had those two major strokes and hundreds of “silent strokes.” I am tutoring part time at Sylvan. I teach reading, writing and help with homework unless it is Math. I teach kids that are in pre-K up to college age kids. I know I was 100% correct in going into secondary education. I can handle most of the little kids since I have them 2 or 3 at a time. Usually I have a high school aged kid, a middle school kid and then a 1st grader. Rest and relax and have a very merry Christmas!🎄❤️🥂

    1. I’m happy I missed those years of online teaching. The worst part now is dealing with the masks. I can’t imagine when that will end. Thanks for the reminder to pray. I said one this morning for your health and peace. Merry Christmas to you, Shay! And much love.

  10. Merry Christmas! I am home enjoying my break from working at my school also! Sleep in and reading, baking a few treats and enjoying. Good poem. My creative writing mind shuts down during times of stress as too much to do. Recovery time needed.

    As for the poem…clever. it’s wit well-penned. Hot dang, it even rhymes! High praise from a Philistine. Also, rollicking and lots of fun. Which is high praise from someone who aspires to more.

    As for the upcoming break, it’s definitely a reward long overdue. The month-and-change from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day is a festival of holidays and time off. Then comes the unrelieved Long March until Spring Break or Memorial Day, depending on your employer.

    You know what? That’s a January 4 concern, and today is nowhere near that day. Right now, a cloudless horizon. Enjoy it, Crystal. Luxuriate in something that’s been too uncommon lately – time for just you and your family. Already, that battery’s climbing out of the flashing red single digits.

    1. Time for family. ✔️ Lauren was home for the weekend and now some time in the OK panhandle with our parents and siblings. Luxuriating. I even slept past 8 this morning. That’s a Christmas miracle. Merry, merry to you, my friend!
