Yoga?

Once upon a time, I went to a yoga class. In fact, two different classes kept me balanced for about four years. That was probably at least seven years ago. I just realized I miss it—the strength, the flexibility, the relaxation.

Even with my COVID vaccines, I can’t get super excited about going to a class. Meanwhile, I found one online at Sarah Beth Yoga. It seemed like perfect start—30-minute Full Body Yoga for Flexibility and Strength.

The class begins in child’s pose, my knees on the mat, belly between thighs, hands stretched in front of me, forehead and chest resting downward, and from there a flow to downward facing dog. I can do this, I thought.

The class progressed with a walk to the top of the mat, a slow roll to standing. Sarah Beth says, “Consider what kind of a practice you would like to have today. What is the intention you would like to set for your practice? You don’t have to think too hard. Just let it be the first thing that comes to mind and let that set the pace of your flow and intensity.”

And sometimes that’s all we need—a little guidance to remind us of our intentions—that we don’t need to think too hard—but we do need to choose our purpose. That seems like common sense, but sometimes I forget. Clearly, I need more yoga.

Namaste.

  1. And this is so very true, “sometimes that’s all we need—a little guidance to remind us” It is often too easy to allow ourselves to get side tracked and derailed from where it is we seek to go. A little reminder can go a long way.

    1. We are definitely not made to do everything alone. Somebody helps me (gives guidance, extends grace). I help somebody else (etc.). Tag. You’re it. Have a great day, Rebecca! Thanks for visiting!

  2. I just started doing yoga myself about a month ago. I follow “Yoga with Adriene” on YouTube. She’s got lots of options, depending on what you want to work on. I love the sense of calm I feel afterwards.

  3. I like the idea of a gentle yoga, but only when I’m feeling well. This week, not so much. The first position you showed is a favorite stretch routine for me, base on ancient prayer postures among some religious groups. Another is the walking stand until I’m upright, then walking back down to the double kneeling position.

    1. Just one more thing I like about yoga is the guilt-free option to go back to child’s pose. I definitely would need to work my way up to longer practices. Thanks for visiting, Jo! ❤️

    1. I like the energy in a class. I tend to push myself a little harder when I know someone is watching. But I like the home practice for easing my way back to a group setting.

  4. I’ve done yoga off and on over the years. I liked most of the classes I attended. I tried Yoga with Adriene, an online class that everyone loves, but… I didn’t seem to get much benefit from it. My point is, I’ll try Sarah Beth Yoga so thanks for the suggestion.

    1. I didn’t know Yoga with Adriene was a thing until today. Actually, I hadn’t thought of trying any online classes until this April. I hope you like Sarah Beth. I notice that some of her videos say ‘level 2’ or ‘intermediate.’

  5. I wondered if Y would be Yoga. Thank you so much for sharing the video. I definitely will do this. Yoga is something I have been thinking about taking up for awhile. As I age, and my body groans, I know I need to do something. And thank you for sharing that thought about our intentions. That made me think.

  7. I was really into yoga at the beginning of this pandemic but slowly my spirits started to dip and just did not have the motivation to get back into it… Hoping to very soon… I feel it will do a great deal for my mental health.. ❤️Thanks for the reminder!

    1. I’ve only taken this one yoga class, so don’t be too impressed. After my month of action, I hit a skid. Well, actually I helped my daughter move out of her apartment which included 8 hours on the road and a few days of labor. I’m tired. But I’m close enough to a beach to go this morning, so one more mini trip in the car for a couple of hours of peace. Find your peace, BB. You’ve got this. Happy Mother’s Day!

  8. Yoga has been an absolute life saver for me when I have been suffering with anxiety after my divorce. There is something truly centering and grounding! I miss going to the yoga studio but yoga with adrienne on YouTube is a fantastic resource!
