How many times have I put myself together to mask my falling apart? I have a classic move. When circumstances call, I dress to impress, say a prayer, and wear my grandmother’s pearls.
Grandma passed on December 11, 1991, almost nine years after Grandpa. She had been living in a nursing home after having a stroke a few years earlier, but that’s not how I remember her. I never heard a single ugly word pass through her lips. I remember the classiest of ladies who dressed to impress and loved the Lord. I remember her picture perfect two-bedroom home with the masters on the walls. All of it on a shoestring budget. She shopped at consignment stores, possessed an eye for elegance, and lived within her means. I inherited her pearls and her Van Gogh and hopefully her attitude.
And for those times that I need to conjure strength and normalcy and class, I stand up straight and choose my clothes with care. I say a prayer and wear my grandmother’s pearls.
Do you find yourself being extra reflective during this time? These days (and the A-Z blogging challenge) have given me pause to give thanks for so many people and things in my life. I hope you have your own little collection:
A is for Apple and B is for Boozer and C is for Champagne and Chanel No. 5 and D is for Dad and E is for Epiphany and F is for Faith + Gratitude = Peace + Hope and G is for Great _______ and H is for Hatbox and Honeysuckle and I for an I and J is for Jesus and K is for Kody and L is for the Lovely Lauren and M is for the Marvelous Misti and a Dirty Martini and N is for the Numbers and O is for the Oversized Owl
People say time travel is not possible. Memories prove them wrong. I always recall my Grandma as a strong woman. I can picture her out in the garden of her own home at the age of 86, still living the strong prairie life that got her to that point. Thanks for sharing Crystal and stay well. Allan

Thank you for sharing, Allan. My grandparents all lived five hours away by car, but I’m thankful for all of our visits and their quiet influence.

I enjoy these posts so much, and this loving description moved me in a special way. My beloved mother-in-law , Ruth, also wore some pearls that she had purchased in Spain. I wear them now, with fond memories of a remarkable woman and friend.
Thanks for sharing, Crystal. 🤗

I know your Grandmother would be pleased you wear her pearls and remember her. You might even be able to find a poster of the Van Gogh vase of flowers sometime when you find the right spot.

I can feel both grandmothers joining forces and smiling down. I’ve come to realize that things don’t really matter, but people do.

My mom always used to ask if I handled it with grace? A fall, a lost job, a lost love or friend meaning did I wear my pearls?

That’s awesome. It’s sort of like straightening your crown.

Yes, my mother was not born in the South but she loved it when they retired in Alabama on the Gulf Coast.

Awww! Thank you, Lisa! It has been a challenge, but hopefully I’ll post more than before when it’s over. I have some extra ideas, just like today. Should I write about pizza or my grandmother’s pearls?

That’s another memento. I’d love to learn from her. That’s something I really admire.
Prayer is a good one.

It’s too bad that we can’t learn more from our grandparents when we’re younger, at least for me anyway. To think that she’s been gone for almost thirty years. ✨💕✨

We don’t realise when we’re young. I’m still young! But too late to hear from them…

Let me rephrase—like when we’re kids.

🙂 I still see myself as just a kid… although I’m beginning to feel like I’m beginning to grow up.
